Elderly persons in Albania face many difficulties: including limited incomes, abandonment by their children, limited possibilities for socializing with others, and their health care problems, especially in regions where access to health services is limited, particularly in a region like Puke. Titled “Think even for us”, the project Daily Center for the Elderly aimed to enable the social integration of the abandoned elderly in the district of Puka by providing social and medical care, entertainment and rehabilitation services to the elderly persons in need. Apart from integration of the elderly in the community, the project served to raise awareness in the local and central government to increase attention towards these members of the community. The project also included services for elderly in Fushë Arrëz, Gjegjan, Rrapë, Iballë and Luf. It is a unique initiative as this is the first of its kind to be implemented in the district of Puka. The project was started with identification of 450 elderly persons who were exposed to risks, problems and in need of aid. So far, the center has served 225 elderly women and men. In the future we expect to assist another 1200 benefi ciaries. These beneficiaries have taken part in 18 different activities, entertainments, excursions, and meetings with special guests. 12 elderly receive physiotherapy service at home. The Vodafone Albania Foundation’s partner in this project was the organization “In Benefit of Northern Women” operating in the area of Puka. The project was of great impact not only for services provided to elderly, but also for its power to generate additional contributions to this community through engagement of the municipality, which shows further sustainability.
