The first phase of the Corona-AI scientific research by Imperial College London has been successfully completed.
DreamLab users around the globe have helped Imperial College London scientists accelerate the first phase of the Corona-AI project in just 6 months. Launched in April this year, the Corona-AI project aims to discover different combinations of food molecules to see which could theoretically help a person fight Covid-19.
The Corona-AI study by Imperial College London has been made possible thanks to the award-winning DreamLab app, created by the Vodafone Foundation, initially designed to support cancer research. DreamLab uses the collective processing power of charging smartphones to create a virtual supercomputer capable of processing thousands of calculations, speeding up the time needed to deliver results.
Researchers working on this project at Imperial College London have announced the first findings, including the identification of food molecules with antiviral properties to assess which food combinations may offer some medical benefits in treating Covid-19, such as blueberries, apples, oranges, lemons, cabbage, broccoli, onions, garlic, celery, beans.
The study has also shown that existing drugs used to fight cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, and metformin could be repurposed or used as alternative indications in the fight against Covid-19.
The findings will now be further analyzed by researchers, who state that clinical validation is necessary to assess the potential impact of these molecules.
The app has already been downloaded by 100,000 smartphone users in 17 countries worldwide, including Albania, to help accelerate scientific research.
Phase 1 of the Corona-AI project has examined thousands of combinations of existing drugs and food-based drug-like molecules, using Artificial Intelligence to process 100 million mathematical calculations and help scientists explore their potential effect against Covid-19.
To download the app, search for DreamLab in the iOS App Store or Android Play Store. DreamLab can be downloaded and used free of charge by Vodafone customers using MB or Wi-Fi. DreamLab can also be used by customers of other operators by choosing the amount of MB they want to dedicate to DreamLab, as well as via wireless networks. No personal data from the user’s device is ever used.
