Close to the people in their difficult days
by Eno Zoga, Volunteer of Albanian Red Cross, Vlora Branch
Among many families that lost everything by the recent floods in southern Albania, as a Red Cross Volunteer I remember one of them during the relief operations carried out for inhabitants of the village Dellinje, Commune of Novosole in Vlora region. The Stefa family lives in very difficult housing conditions affected by an extreme poverty. The father takes care of his two daughters aged 10 and 12 years old. He has to assist his wife as well who is diagnosed with severe depression deteriorated by the difficult socio-economic conditions. Furthermore, he also assists his 80 years old mother, who due to health condition and advanced age has limited capacities to move.
The recent floods have ruined their little cottage where family members barely stayed together. It destroyed their modest furniture. The entire family is surviving through disability assistance package provided by the government for the youngest girl. We met with many families during our humanitarian interventions caused by flooding and who lost everything, but I was touched by the endless heartfelt appreciations and thanking for the support provided on the right moment when it was needed more than ever. It was a light at the end of the dark tunnel for them.
We have collaborated with Vodafone Albania Foundation in many emergency situations, and I am pleased to affirm that the response has always been fast, addressing the real and immediate needs of the affected population. During this emergency, 680 families received the emergency family food parcels, blankets and hygiene kits. They needed our help in that particular time, later all of this would not have had the same impact for them.
I am just one of the many volunteers that decided to help with the distribution of food and non-food packages for the families affected by the floods. Only when you are part of such an experience you can understand and feel the joy and pride that helping others give.
