The children of families from poorer or more remote backgrounds are often disadvantaged when it comes to education and their possibilities for a stable future. A lack of direction and a sense of hopelessness often cause these teenagers to drop out of school early, leaving them with no qualifications or training to take on a job. It is thus vital that especially these youths are helped in finding their path in life. For the 2009/2010 grants’ round Don Bosko Social Center once again teamed up with the Vodafone Albania Foundation to provide business courses and internships to disadvantaged youths, in the areas of Tirana, Shkodra (Berdic and Bardhaj), Lezha, Lac and Tale Village. The very neediest youths were chosen through a careful selection process. The project took the form of 2400 hours of training in different courses. There were 300 beneficiaries of this project (235 girls and 65 boys). The courses varied widely, so for example 71 youths were trained in cooking specialties, 64 in tailoring, 20 in computer skills and 45 in plumbing. 40 % of the young people now work in local business or private enterprises while the other part is being helped to find work in collaboration with the business. 11 social events were also held for the students, as were weekly cultural activities. Although the project was completed in March 2010 its impact will surely benefit the participants for years to come.
