This year the “Open a Window” project started its second installment. The aim continues to be the education and social integration of blind people in Albania through innovative educational approaches and full use of the opportunities provided by communication technologies. The project now though also covers four more regions: Tirana, Korca, Tepelena and Lezha. This brings the number of successfully running centers to nine; five of which were set up last year (2008/09), while the number of total beneficiaries has doubled to 200 individuals. The four new basic communication platforms equipped with ‘Jaws’ speaking software were installed in the four towns. These platforms enable the trained groups of blind persons to gain direct access to internet and computer resources for the purpose of independent living and educational development. Therefore, this project provided an intensive 4 months training to 5 or more groups of 20 blind persons each (100 individuals altogether). This project is an appreciated contribution for the blind persons’ communities and had a profound impact on the direct project beneficiaries and their families, as well as on the national organization of the blind people itself. The participants evaluated the benefits as an indispensable contribution for their own future; in different areas such as education, employment, independence and access to information. The Vodafone Albania Foundation’s partner in this project was the Albanian National Blind People Association.
