Paralympic Games organized for the first time in Albania
Vodafone Albania Foundation and the British Council, in collaboration with the Albanian National Olympic Committee, will organize for the first time in Albania the Paralympic Games, which are dedicated to opportunities for the inclusion of people with disabilities in sport and cultural activities, in order to make them protagonists and ambassadors of the inclusion message.
President of the state, He. Prof. Dr. Bamir Topi will join this initiative, by welcoming the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games which will be held at the premises of the Presidency building. Accompanied by a number of personalities of sport, civic society, diplomatic corps, friends and sports fans of the Paralympic movement, Mr. Topi will hand the Olympic torch to the Paralympics participants. The Olympic flame, held by the well-known Paralympic cyclist Haki Doku, will make a tour round Tirana and will then arrive to the premises of the University of Sports in Tirana where it will stay lit to accompany the first Paralympics Games in Albania 8th to 10th of June 2012.
More than 120 athletes from 6 cities will participate in the first Albanian Paralympics. They will compete in 5 sport disciplines (basketball, Ping-Pong, goal ball, weightlifting). Many young volunteers will be present in this event in order to provide their support for the participating athletes as well as give a message of promoting the social inclusion movement.
The Albanian Paralympic Games are organized in Albania in the framework of Inclusion Week which will contain a number of events aiming at public awareness on equal conditions for active participation in social life of all people, despite their physical or special disabilities.
