Lindita and Gezim are a happy couple that live in the city of Fier, parents of two wonderful children. Like many other people with disabilities they have experienced a lot of difficulties, prejudism and barriers. Gezim has graduted in Economics and has continued with additional qualificantions. But despite this, he has never worked in his life and finding a job for him seemed like a mission imposible. On the other hand Lindita, a teacher by proffesion, has had some working experience even though very limited. Being both parents and having to care for their two children makes it more important and crucual for them to have a job. To make this happen though, it was needed to knock on a lot of “doors” that are not allways opened, it was needed to meet and talk with a lot of insitutions and possible employers, and with people that believe and support this kind of efforts. And this is how I met Gezim and Lindita.
I was implementing a project for the promotion of the employement of people with different abilites in the framework of the ‘World of Difference” 2014 program. This initiative focused on identification of the cases in need, qualification and lobing for the employement of this community, in 6 big cities including Fieri, Korca, Shkodra, Durresi, Vlora and Tirana. Often we have been pesimistic but we never gave up.
Like in any other succses story, a whole team of people (officials of the local goverment, activists of the civil society, etc) was engaged to make a significant difference in the life of this family. And finally, our efforts gave the so much wanted results. Today both Gezim and Lindita are working: Gezim works as an economist in the Hospital Directory of Fieri and Linidita as e daycare teacher. “ Today I am a different person, I am proud for myself and proud in front of my family” – replied Gezim when I asked him.
My challenge continues. There is much more to do.
